Fake products: SON clamps down on computer village

The rising number of counterfeit mobile phones and other computer related products at the African largest technology market, the computer village in Lagos, has been a source of concern, which is now warranted to a final clamp down by government.

This was made know by the director general of the Standards Organization of Nigeria, Dr. Joseph Odumodu.

The organization has discovered more than 80 percent of the mobile phones and other related computer accessories at the market are not genuine, after conducting a series of survey and investigations.

The largest percentage of sales from the brands includes Hewlett Packard, Nokia, Samsung and others were not directly supplied from the manufacturers but through the counterfeiting, which doing more damage to both the brands and the local market.

The most worrisome aspect is the complexity on the process, as some of these global brands has appointed their local agents that engages on these counterfeiting products, which makes them more powerful and money inflow than even the original brand owners.

The one week dateline given to the dealers of fake phones and computer accessories in Lagos computer village has elapsed, the organization has prepared for an impromptu visit, he said.

It is a total war on counterfeit products in Nigeria, which the organization   is committed to win, and make Nigerian mobile phones and computer / related accessories genuinely and counterfeit free market, he added.

In a related development, a global synergy in combating the growing inflow of counterfeiting products, especially in mobile phones and computer related produces around the world is needed, as all international crimes are a local crimes somewhere.

The called was made by the lead investigation for HP anti-counterfeiting programme for Europe ,middle-east and Africa Mr. Geofrey Eyles.

He acknowledged that, counterfeiting parasites feeds from the huge investment for businessmen and women, and that everyone must collaborate against these rings in other to perfect the economy.
