FCCPC recovers ₦10bn for consumers in five months

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC)says it has recovered more than ₦10 billion for aggrieved customers in just five months, underscoring the scale of complaints across key sectors of the economy.

Commission released fresh data on Thursday covering March to August 2025, showing more than 9,000 cases resolved within the period.

According to a statement by the Director, Corporate Affairs of the Commission, Ondaje Ijagwu,
about N10 billion was also recovered for dissatisfied Nigerians within the period.

Banking topped the list of grievances with over 3,100 complaints, ranging from unauthorised deductions to disputed charges and loan repayment issues. Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) followed with 1,543 cases, while fintech firms and electricity providers also ranked high on the chart.

The regulator said fintech and banking disputes carried the greatest financial burden, highlighting widespread consumer vulnerability in critical financial services.

Electricity complaints, totalling 458, largely revolved around billing disputes and service failures, while the e-commerce sector saw frequent but smaller-value cases linked to refunds, counterfeit goods and undelivered products.

The FCCPC noted a surge in digital lending and microfinance-related disputes, coinciding with the rollout of new rules aimed at curbing abuses in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital credit space.

“These numbers are not just statistics; they tell the story of consumer frustration and the daily challenges Nigerians face in essential services,” FCCPC chief Tunji Bello said in Abuja.

He stressed that the Commission is stepping up enforcement and working with other regulators, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, to address systemic abuses.

The FCCPC urged companies to strengthen their complaint-handling mechanisms and called on consumers to continue reporting violations through its online portal and zonal offices.

“Every complaint helps us identify patterns of exploitation and hold businesses accountable,” Bello added.
