The Federal Capital Territory Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Directorate (FCT RUWASSA) has commissioned a gender-friendly public toilet facility in Kwaita Community, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The facility was inaugurated on behalf of the Director of FCT RUWASSA, Dr. Joyce Chinyere Echoke, by the Head of the Department of Water Quality, Monitoring and Analysis, Mr. Danladi Umar Katampe.
The initiative is part of efforts to promote improved sanitation and support the Federal Government’s drive to end open defecation in Nigeria, in line with Executive Order 009.
FCT RUWASSA has set a target of declaring Kwali Area Council Open Defecation Free (ODF) by the fourth quarter of 2026.
Speaking at the commissioning, Echoke urged residents of Kwaita to take ownership of the facility by ensuring proper maintenance, cleanliness and sustained functionality.
She stressed that community participation would be critical to ensuring that the facility continues to serve residents and contributes to improved sanitation standards in the area.
The Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Hon. Nuhu Daniel, commended FCT RUWASSA and its project partners, including WaterAid Nigeria, Foundation for Sanitation Improvement (FSI) and Black Pelican Limited, for supporting the initiative.
To facilitate the effective operation of the facility, Daniel donated a new power generator to the local managing cooperative.
Also speaking, WaterAid Nigeria Country Director, Evelyn Mere, represented by the organisation’s Head of Programme, Mr. Napet Chuktu, emphasised the importance of gender-inclusive management and community-led approaches to sustaining sanitation infrastructure.
Chuktu particularly highlighted the role of women in leadership and community management, noting that their participation is essential to the long-term sustainability of development projects.
The commissioning marks another step in efforts to improve access to sanitation facilities and reduce open defecation in the FCT, particularly in rural communities.
