A total of 44,501 number plates and 13,491 driver’s licences were issued by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), to the public, between January and August, this year.
A breakdown of the number plates issued within the period under review revealed that a total of 31,417 private, 12,987 commercial, 78 fancies and 19 out-of-series number plates were duly given out to the public.
According to the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, who disclosed this, further revealed that between August 9 and September 9, 2014, a total of 1,505 renewed driver’s licences have been issued to successful applicants.
He added that the administration has received additional 10,839 private number plates recently from the Federal Road Safety Corps
(FRSC) Plant, to take care of the ever-increasing demand of number plates in the Territory.
“This new consignment will go a long way to meet the demands of the applicants for number plates in the Federal Capital Territory,” a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the FCT Minister, Muhammad Sule, quoted him saying at the weekend after meeting with some senior officials of the FCT Transportation Secretariat, in his office.
The statement added that between August 10th and September 10th, 2014, more than 5,400 passed inspection for roadworthiness while about 360 failed.
“The Minister reiterated that 13 accident inspections and more than 2,755 pre-registrations were carried out within the period under review to ensure that the best is enjoyed in the entire 8,000 square kilometers of the FCT.
“He (the minister) noted that illegal motor parks are one of the major causes of traffic bottlenecks around the roundabouts and interchanges and assured that that it is been tackled.
“The Officers and men of the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) have been deployed to monitor illegal motor parks around Berger junction, Nicon junction, Area 1, AYA, Area 3, Federal Secretariat and Wuse axis to dislodge them,” the statement stressed.
