FCTA records 55,545 unroadworthy vehicles in 2019

A total of 55,545 vehicles out of 103,919 vehicles in Abuja inspected for roadworthiness, representing about 53.55% of the total vehicles inspected failed the test in 2019, according to inspection report from the FCT inspection centres.
Accordingly, the report out of the vehicles presented for inspection only 48,274 vehicles passed the road worthiness test, which represents 46.45 percent of the total value.
Making this disclosure yesterday, the Acting Secretary, FCT Transportation Secretariat, Mrs. Alice Odey-Achu, during the Secretariat’s annual media Press briefing.
According to her, the inspecting officers has established that the number of vehicles that failed the road worthiness were fairly used vehicles that came into the country with multiple defects.
“ The number of vehicles that failed the test is higher due to the following reasons; most imported fairly used vehicles ‘ tokumbo ‘ have one or more defects that are detected during the computerised inspections which ordinarily cannot be detected during physical inspection .
“Poor vehicle maintenance culture of most drivers and bad roads network in the suburbs also contributed to some vehicle components becoming defective “, she stressed.
Odey-Achu however revealed that the FCT Administration through its Transportation Secretariat raked in over N3.4 billion from vehicle licensing, vehicle particulars renewal, Change of Ownership, and other sundry fees and fines from various defaulters within the period.
This, according to her the FCTA represents 22.46 percent increment in its revenue profile compared to 2018 from the sector.
She noted that the Secretariat was working towards raising its revenue generation profile in 2020.
