The Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken campaign against drug abuse to secondary schools in Territory, where students were charged not to cut their dreams short through involvement in the menace.
In particular, the FCTA engaged hundreds of students at an enlightenment campaign against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking, held in Government Secondary School, Life-camp, Gwarimpa Abuja, recently.
Speaking at the event, HHSS Acting Mandate Secretary, Mr. Noel Haruna, warned the students to steer clear of drug abuse, as it will destroy the future of any important personality, if not addressed at the elementary level.
Represented by the Director Special duties in the Health secretariat, Dr Matthew Ashekini, said students should focus on their studies and avoid issues that will deprive them from realizing their aspirations so that they can be useful members of the society.
According to him, the 2023 international day against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking, with the theme: ‘People first, stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention’ is coordinated by FCT -Drug Abuse Control Committee in collaboration with Centre for School Health Education and Environmental Hygiene.
Similarly, the chairperson FCT – Drug Abuse Control Committee, Pharmacist Boniface Ikwu, said extending outreaches to schools especially secondary even tertiary institutions was to meet the target population, which are mostly the young minds between 10 and 25 years.
He said: “We try to reach them before they come across these substances, drugs. The teachers too should join the struggle”.
