The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has upped plans to embark on a joint assessment of flood prone areas and estates in the nation’s capital city, so as to mitigate the impact of urban flooding.
The Agency discloses that all identified infractions would be removed no matter how big the structure may be as government will not fold its arms and watch people put the lives of others at risk.
Making this disclosure in a chat with newsmen in Abuja, FEMA Director General, Alhaji Abbas Idriss, noted that the flooding in the Lokogoma area has serious reduced due to the proactive measures taken by the Administration.
He said: “Seasonal flooding in Lokogoma has reduced in the past three years, because we removed obstructions to the flow of water. People went and built on the water ways, those structures will be pulled down”.
According to him, the assessment tour would involve key stakeholders including the Department of Development Control, Engineering Services Department and Estate Developers.
The FEMA boss, who also described this week’s flash flood witnessed in some parts of the territory as a wake up call, appealed to residents to adhere to the master plan and approved building codes.
Normal onset of rainfall in the Federal Capital Territory is expected by the 24th of May, going by the seasonal climate prediction by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency.
