FG approves N14.7bn contract for FCT community

The Federal Government has approved an N14.7billion contractfor the provision of engineering infrastructure to Gidan Daya Urban Renewal Site, Gidan Daya area of Kurudu District in the FederalCapital Territory.

The contract with a completion period of 36 months was approved at theweekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

Briefing correspondents, at the end of the meeting, on Wednesday, FCT minister of State, Olajumoke Akinjide, said the Gidan Dayaarea, where those who will bedis lodged from the Nyanya Labour Camp, which has since been declaredunfit for human habitation by the United Nations Habitat will berelocated.

“The council approved the award for contract for theprovision of engineering infrastructure to Gidan Daya Urban Renewal Site, Gidan Daya area of Kurudu District of the FCT.

“The FCT Satellite Towns Development Agency is mandated to provideinfrastructural facilities and social amenities to the Satellite Townsand rural areas of the FCT.

“In its desire to discharge the mandate, the council approved theaward of the contract in favour of Messrs Nairda Limited in the sum ofN14.billion with completion period of 36 months,” she said.

Akinjide said the Labour Camp built over 30 years ago specifically forthe labourers who built the FCT had become overcrowded with poorsanitary condition.

She said the 152 hectares of land in Gidan Daya along the Jikwoyi-Karshi Road will house 700 families to be relocated from the camp.

Some of the services she said would be provided for the about 50,000inhabitants of the area are roads, electricity, water supply, sewagesystem, schools, markets, police station and fire station among others.

She added that the area would also accommodate some new residentsapart from those to be relocated.

He said by the time 8,054 flats are developed, the current labour camp would undergo urban renewal and be available for use by the administration.
