The Minister of Lands housing and urban development, Mrs Akon Eyakenyi has set up an inter-ministerial committee on national lands policy to ensure prudent utilization of all land resources in the country.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, in Abuja, the minister who was represented by the permanent secretary, Dr Ezekiel Oyemoni said the need for prudent utilization of land resources was key to the said inauguration of the committee whose members will harness the resources for the evolvement of a national land policy; “The fact that land is a ascarce resources and ineleastic in supply underscores the need for prudent utilization of land resources, which makes it necessary to establish a comprehensive regulatory policy that ensures that land as a commodity is put to the highest and best use.

Engr. Aliyu made this emphasis when he received on behalf of the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, the Turkish Minister of Trade, Rushar Peckan who paid a courtesy call on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing recently. He said, “In order to achieve success in our development since Nigeria and Turkey have common development goals, there is need to share knowledge in technological investment and collaborate in engineering design and construction for the purpose of providing infrastructure for development”. A statement signed by Stephen Kilebi DD(Press and Public Relations)said the minister expressed the willingness of the Ministry of Works and Housing to collaborate with investors in the road infrastructure sector. He added that his Ministry was ready to partner with Turkey in the areas, of development of various Greenfield and Brownfield projects across the nation, mass development of affordable housing in selected city centres across Nigeria, capacity development and mentoring for Public-Private partnership officials . Earlier, the Minister of Trade for the Republic of Turkey, Rushar Pekan disclosed that the purpose of the visit was to seek increased collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Housing with the view to increase Turkey’s trade volume in Nigeria in road construction and engineering. Pekan who described Nigeria as one of the most important countries and the biggest economy in Africa noted that Nigeria had great potential in road construction and engineeringadding that her country was blessed with experts in that field. She therefore urged the ministry to consider Turkish investors in those areas. She was accompanied on the visit by the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Melih Ulueren and some Turkish investors.
She however lamented the fact that the ministry has been eluded of such a comprehensive policy, hence the need for such a committee to revive the situation. “It is in this regard that you have all been assembled to pull and harness resources aimed at evolving a national Land policy.
Chairman of the committee, Goeffery Tochukwu, Tabansi who is also the director of compensation and acquisition, called on other members of the ministry to support the committee in ensuring that its goals are achieved. “this is s vary progressive step and a truly new development towards the establishment of a land policy for Nigeria. The committee will do it’s best to ensure the full implementation of the committee program. We therefore call on your support for the actualization of this noble objective.”
