The Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), has inaugurated the Social and Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC) Technical Working Group (TWG) on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices.
Speaking during the inauguration yesterday, director Family Health (FMOH), Dr. Adebimpe Adebiyi said the formation of the TWG is an effort to support government and other stakeholders in the delivery of high-impact nutrition practices.
According to her, the purpose of the SBCC TWG is to provide a platform for knowledge sharing and coordination of SBCC program in Nigeria.
Dr. Adebiyi added that some of the activities of the Group will range from Technical review and guidance on IYCF SBCC activities, dissemination and sharing knowledge regarding SBCC best practices to strengthening/coordination of information and activities on SBCC intervention messages and materials related to IYCF.
In her remarks, the Project Director of Civil Society Scale-Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN), Beatrice Eluaka, pledged the commitment of her organization towards making IYCF practices working in Nigeria.
“When I was in Abidjan two months ago Nigeria was applauded as one of five countries that have succeeded in reducing stunting. We came back to Nigeria only to see the MICS survey that has shown that our stunting rate has increased. So we have lots of work on our part and I think the children of this country will hold us responsible if we just sit back and do nothing to improve the situation.
“So I am on behalf of this team stating here and now that we are ready to work with the Ministry to see how we can improve the situation,” she said.
