In a bid to re-position Nigeria as the world’s largest producer of palm-oil, the Federal Government in partnership with the Enugu State Government is set to distribute a total of 19,700 improved palm seedlings at no cost to farmers in the state.
The Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Mike Eneh disclosed this during the flag-off ceremony of the Semi-Wide Groove Programme, at Udi Local Government Area, where over 500 beneficiaries were selected.
Also speaking at the event, the Regional Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Uche Nwafor, said the beneficiaries are expected to replace the old palm trees with new ones which have maximum maturity duration of 3 years.
Commending the effort of the government towards reviving agriculture for the benefit of all stakeholders, the beneficiaries noted that the initiative would go a long way in resuscitating palm plantations across the country.
