FG reaffirms commitment to eradicate polio by 2014

President Goodluck Jonathan has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment towards eradicating Polio disease in the country by December 2014, to meet up with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target.

The President, who disclosed this yesterday in Abuja, during the opening of a summit on eradication of polio disease in Nigeria, organised by the Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with RotaryInternational, also emphasised the Government’s commitment towards safe-guarding the health of Nigerian children and halting the morbidity and mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Jonathan, who was represented by the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said time has come for Nigerians and stakeholders on health to join hands to ensure that polio is eradicated in all communities and the nation in general.

The President, while commending the Rotary International, for their role in mobilizing global efforts to eradicate polio in Nigeria, said the Federal Government will continue to ensure that the required funding for the polio eradication programme is provided.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan said, the summit, with the theme: “Polio End Game, Let us End it Now”, is aimed towards finding more ways of saving the Nigerian’s children, and the country’s future generations from the scourge of poliomyelitis and other child killer disease.
