The Solicitor General of the Federation(SGF) Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, Monday, reiterated the federal government’s commitment to freedom of information within Nigeria’s public sector.
In commemoration of the International Day for Universal Access to Information, Jedy-Agba called on government officials, stakeholders, and civil society to engage in meaningful discussions to reshape the landscape of information access in Nigeria.
This was made known at a conference titled “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector,” while stressing the urgent need for coherent policies across all sectors.
The conference aimed to assess progress in government information accessibility and foster a culture of openness among public entities.
Highlighting recent judicial rulings that have strengthened the Freedom of Information Act, she emphasized the judiciary’s critical role in promoting transparency within public institutions.
“Government business must not be shrouded in secrecy,” she stated, aligning her message with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for an open administration.
She disclosed of the government’s upcoming “Award of FOIA Compliance 2025,” which will recognize institutions that excel in upholding these principles, setting a new benchmark for accountability in Nigeria.
Concluding, the SGF called on government officials, stakeholders, and civil society to engage in meaningful discussions to reshape the landscape of information access in Nigeria, stressing the urgent need for coherent policies across all sectors.
