In a bid to tackle the high unemployment rate in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Education, with support from the World Bank, has launched a skills acquisition program called; ‘the Innovation, Development, and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS-TVET)’ project.
This initiative aims to equip young people with marketable, high-demand skills that will pave the way for financial independence.
During the flag-off and orientation ceremony held in Kaduna at one of the training centers, Blessing Ogwu, the national project coordinator, who was represented by Mr. Shedrack Tukura, stated that the project’s goal is to enhance the capacity of Nigeria’s skills development system to produce relevant skills for both the formal and informal sectors.
The project will focus on various sectors including ICT, cosmetology, animal husbandry, fashion, and more. “It seeks to reform and strengthen the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system to ensure that Nigerian youths acquire skills that are in high demand in the labor market”.
Mr. Iliya Anthony Timbuak, the Managing Director of the Kaduna Enterprise Development Agency (KADEDA), emphasized the need for Nigerians to become self-reliant.
He explained that the Kaduna State Government is supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with grants and loans to help them establish businesses and create jobs.
