The management of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has dismissed as false and misleading recent allegations published by some national newspapers claiming that the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, was involved in land grabbing, extortion and administrative high handedness.
This was contained in a statement signed and issued by Head, Public Affairs, Kenneth Chigelu.
The reports, allegedly credited to a coalition of estate developers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the National Assembly to investigate the FHA boss.
The Authority described the allegations as baseless and accused the publishers of failing to seek clarification from FHA before going to press.
According to the management, the complaints stem largely from ongoing reforms introduced by the Authority, particularly the digitisation of its operations aimed at eliminating corruption, land fraud and other irregularities in property administration.
FHA explained that prior to the reforms, criminal elements exploited loopholes within the analogue system through illegal land allocations, file manipulation, double allocations and forgery of documents.
However, with the launch of the Authority’s digital operations on 1st May 2024, all analogue property file processes were discontinued.
The Authority noted that the digital transformation has significantly improved transparency, safeguarded property records and accelerated service delivery.
As part of the reforms, FHA also deployed advanced technology, including the acquisition of a MAX 350 drone, to digitally capture and monitor all its landed properties nationwide, helping to identify encroachments and illegal annexation of government land.
Management said these measures have disrupted long standing illegal activities carried out by individuals posing as estate developers.
The Authority further disclosed that it conducted a nationwide Verification, Regularisation and Ratification exercise to allow genuine allottees with incomplete or irregular documentation to regularise their records.
According to FHA, the exercise also provided an opportunity for individuals who had unlawfully encroached on its lands to come forward, regularise their status and settle outstanding obligations.
The Authority said findings from the exercise revealed that many individuals occupying FHA lands lacked valid ownership documents and have now resorted to media blackmail in an attempt to resist the reforms.
Contrary to allegations of delays in approvals, FHA maintained that its newly introduced One-Stop Shop approval system has simplified and accelerated approval processes, with applications processed within two weeks where all required documentation is complete.
The Authority also stated that additional mechanisms have been introduced to prevent underpayment and manipulation of statutory fees, a move it said has further frustrated corrupt practices previously aided by compromised insiders.
FHA reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the delivery of affordable housing to Nigerians, stressing that ongoing blackmail and misinformation campaigns would not derail its reform agenda.
The Authority challenged the individuals behind the allegations to publicly identify themselves and present authentic allocation and verification documents to support their claims.
“It is surprising that individuals who claim to have pending court cases against the Authority would abandon the judicial process and instead resort to media trials and blackmail,” the statement added.
FHA assured Nigerians that it remains focused on repositioning the Authority and protecting government property from illegal occupation and land grabbing.
The management therefore urged members of the public to disregard the allegations and remain confident in the Authority’s ongoing reforms and commitment to due process.
