Fight on terror: FG ups security measures at entry airports

The federal government yesterday declared it is set to carry out a comprehensive overhaul of security measures at all entry airports into Nigeria.

The measures among others include subjecting visitors including foreign dignitaries and officials of multilateral institutions to scrutiny and clearance by immigration.

Chairman, Presidential Committee on Airport Security, Professor Sylvester Monye told journalists in Lagos the measures also aims to eliminate traffic gridlock at the Lagos airport.

He said in the past where the practise allows government and private companies protocol officials and aides in Military and non-military uniform access into restricted areas will be stop.

“The unwholesome milling around in the immigration and custom areas is a threat to national security. A stop will be put to the practise forthwith.”

Prof. Monye said the impunity of government and military personnel not supposed to be at the facility will be disallow from using their position to operate in such facilities.

“Henceforth, no protocol officer and aide will be allowed into the arrival/ baggage hall of our international airports” but said accredited ministry of foreign affairs officials may be allowed.

The measures by the committee, drawn from the army, police, FRSC and other military arms will take effect from May 1, this year.
