From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi
The Benue State Government has passionately appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to revisit the construction of the Kashimbila dam located in Taraba State with a view to completing it as a way of averting the effects of flood caused from the Lagdo dam.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in the state, Aondowase Kunde, made this appeal in Makurdi at the weekend during the closing ceremony of a 4-day training on Gender Based Violence, GBV, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, SEA, and Trafficking in Persons,TIP for over 200 Law enforcement officers in the state.
The Commissioner who appreciated the federal government for the attention given to Benue state so far said, “We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to revisit the Kashimbila dam which is supposed to absorb the flood water and construct it to completion.
He said the call has become necessary because each time the Lagdo Dam is opened, Benue which is on the low ground is usually worst hit by the flood.
He expressed confidence that if the dam is constructed, it will mitigate the constant flooding ravaging states each time water from the dam is released.
He expressed fears that the water level in River Benue has already risen to a danger level of 10.05 saying once it rises to 11 meter, it will overflow its banks.
He therefore, explained that the state, assisted by International Organization for Migration,IOM), is training security personnel in the state to take care of IDPs in the event the state is flooded to mitigate disaster in the State and prevent would-be victims from facing issues of GBV, SEA and trafficking.
