Flood destroys houses, properties worth millions in Delta

Date:

From Osas Akenzua, Asaba

Heavy rainfall on Sunday evening in Asaba, Delta State, has wreaked destruction of three houses, and property worth millions of naira.
The three houses and property destroyed are located within Okwe quarters in Asaba, and had rendered the owners homeless.
One of the houses’ owner, who spoke to our correspondent, Obechie Nnamdi decried the absence of drainage system in the entire Okwe quarters as major challenge the people have been facing over the years, especially during rainy season where many houses and property are submerged in deep flood.
According to him,” my house, and two others before the market were submerged inside the flood of the heavy rainfall on Monday, all my property were swept inside the flood after my house collapsed, I have moved into a friend place with my family members, and I appeal to the State government to come to my aid”
Though, the state government had in the past few months been constructing massive drainage system within Asaba, and its environs to channel all the water into the River Niger but this seemingly had not offered urgent solution to the perilous times of flood sweeping problem being experienced in Asaba, and its environs, particularly, when it rains
Speaking to journalists, the Chief Press Secretary ( CPS) to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Charles Aniagwu however sympathized with the victims, stressing that the state government in the last four years had constructed massive drainage systems across the state, especially in Asaba and its environs where its residents were faced with the problem of gully erosion, adding that the drainage system will channel all the water to the River Niger, thereby creating free flow of water during rainfall, and conducive living for the people.
He said that the construction works had been completed in many parts of the state, except Asaba environs where the construction works are on going, and will soon be completed to reduce the suffering of the people.
