The Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) said 10 people were killed and 2,538 were affected by the torrential downpour in Girei local government Area and its environs.
Executive Secretary of the Agency ( ADSEMA), Dr.Suleiman Aminu Muhammad made the disclosure in an interview with Peoples Daily in Yola, weekend, stressing that the heavy rainfall recorded in the state on Thursday recked havoc in the state especially in Girei local government council.
Dr. Muhammad stated that out of the 10 people who lost their lives due to over flooding recorded in the area, 3 corpses are still not recovered while 3 girls who were hospitalised as a result of building collapsed on them have been discharged.
He maintained that most of the victims displaced in Jabbi Lamba and others villages are taking refuge in the residences of their relatives, adding that the government has not established any Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps yet.
He announced that the agency’s assessment team have already visited and evaluated the level of destruction by the flood in the affected areas and that either today (Monday) or next (Tuesday) relief materials will be provided to the affected people.
“Ten people were killed and 2538 others were affected with the flood in Girei local government Area and its environs as the 3 young girls hospitalised as a result of building that collapsed on them have been discharged.
“We are working on the relief materials to be taken to the affected communities and I assure you that by Monday or Tuesday, we shall take the relief materials to those displaced persons in the areas”. Dr.Muhammad stressed.
Earlier the Adamawa state House of Assembly has directed the state government to provide relief materials to communities in Shelleng, Guyuk, Numan, Demsa and Lamurde local government councils affected by floods recently.
The resolution of the house followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by the member representing Shelleng Constituency. Hon. Abubakar Isah when downpour destroyed houses, farmlands, food items, livestock and other valuables in some communities of the affected councils.
