From Yakubu Mustapha, Minna

One year after a devastating flood ravaged the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, the Nami Support Organisation has demanded a full and urgent account of all relief materials and cash donations received by the state government.
The call was made in a press statement issued in Minna by the organization’s Director General, Sanusi Muhammad Umar, who expressed concern over the transparency of the distribution process to the actual victims.
To highlight the urgency of the accountability demand, Umar revealed that the head of the organization had personally contributed to the relief efforts a year ago.
According to the statement, a direct transfer of N10 million was made into the Niger State Emergency Distress account with First Bank on June 10, 2025.
The group stated that twelve months after the disaster, it is imperative for the state government to show transparency in how both cash and in-kind donations were utilized to rebuild the affected communities.
“We are calling on the state government to urgently account for the disbursement and distribution of all relief materials donated to the Mokwa flood victims,” Umar stated, emphasizing that donors and the public deserve to know if the aid reached those truly in need.
He further noted that this call for accountability became necessary following public concern over the omission of some donations from the recently released list by the state government, especially the donations by the NigerSouth Foundation, worth thirty million naira (N30,000,000).
The statement recalled that on 5th June 2025, the letter to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago through the Niger State Emergency Management Agency NSEMA titled: Letter of Condolence and Support to Mokwa Flood Victims, was personally signed by Muhammad Nami and was received on 11th June, 2025.
The donated items included 500 pieces of wrappers, 1,000 buckets, mattresses, and 100 pieces of pillows worth N20 million and N10 million in cash, making a total of N30 million.
The Director General, Mr Sanusi, stressed that the call for accountability is not to apportion blame but to promote transparency and ensure that relief materials intended for the disaster victims reach the actual beneficiaries.
Umar noted that, despite the documentation of the donations and the wide media coverage it received, the official donor list recently published did not carry his principal’s name, indicating foul play.
He therefore called on the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and all other relevant authorities managing the Mokwa flood Relief Funds and materials to immediately review all records of donations received and publish a supplementary/ updated list that accurately reflects all contributions, including those of Nigersouth Foundation.
He also reiterated that Muhammad Nami remains committed to supporting the people of Mokwa and Niger State. He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for God to continue to grant the affected families the strength to overcome the trauma.
