Chelsea have appointed former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow as their head of global commercial activities with immediate effect. Purslow, 50, spent 16 months at Liverpool before stepping down in 2010.

“The club has ambitious plans to build the Premier League’s most pioneering global commercial programme,” said Chelsea in a statement. “The club believes Mr Purslow has the vision and the leadership qualities to help us achieve these plans.”

Ron Gourlay left his role as chief executive last week with chairman Bruce Buck and director Marina Granovskaia assuming his duties. Chelsea added that they do not expect to announce any other senior appointments “in the near future”.
