The Kaduna State Government’s decision to distribute 400 trucks of free fertilizers to 100,000 smallholder farmers has sparked hope for a bumper harvest in the state.

This initiative, flagged off by Governor Uba Sani, aims to boost food security, reduce agricultural costs, and support rural livelihoods.

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, food inflation in Kaduna State has increased to 40.87% in June 2024, up from 25.25% in June 2023.

The rising costs of food commodities have pushed up the country’s rate of inflation. However, farmers in Kaduna State are optimistic about a potentially large harvest due to the availability of fertilizer and sufficient rainfall.

The State Government’s provision of fertilizers, coupled with good weather conditions, is expected to lead to increased crop yields.

Each of the 100,000 farmers will receive two bags of fertilizer free of charge. Additionally, the government has unveiled a crop risk insurance scheme for the beneficiaries, aimed at cushioning the impact of pests, diseases, and climate-induced disasters.

The government has also announced a subsidized fertilizer scheme for commercial farmers, under which each will be entitled to 10 bags at a 40% discount, bringing the price per bag to ₦30,000. This intervention is designed to reduce production costs, encourage job creation, and stabilize market prices.

To guarantee transparency and fairness, a broad-based committee including religious leaders, civil society organizations, labor unions, local officials, and security agencies has been set up to oversee the distribution process.

Similar committees will be replicated at the grassroots level to verify beneficiaries.

Farmers who received the fertilizer have expressed delight and gratitude to the government.

Roseline Samuel a female farmer from Kujuru Local Government Area, said the free fertilizer will help her improve her farm yield.

A traditional leader, Salisu Abubakar, also commended the government for the initiative, saying it will help check food insecurity and reduce poverty.

However, some residents have expressed concerns that the product might not reach the targeted farmers.

In Makarfi Local Government Area, the distribution process was suspended due to some irregularities discovered.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Murtala Dabo, who doubled as the Chairman of the Distribution Committee, assured that every mechanism has been put in place to ensure transparency and accountability during distribution

If properly managed, the fertilizer distribution initiative is expected to lead to a bumper harvest in the state, which will help bring down the rising food inflation.

Pastor Timothy Dangana noted that food security is a major concern due to the dynamic relationship between economic instability, inflation, and food access.

He stressed that if the fertilizer distribution is properly managed and applied to the crops, the state will experience a bumper harvest next year, which will bring down the rising food inflation.

The Kaduna State Government’s free fertilizer distribution initiative has sparked hope for a bumper harvest in the state.

With proper management and distribution, this initiative has the potential to address the high level of food inflation in the state and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

The government’s commitment to transparency and accountability will be crucial in ensuring the success of this initiative.
