At least two people have been killed and one person declared missing following a fresh attack on Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident, which occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, was carried out by unidentified gunmen who reportedly stormed the community and opened fire, sending residents fleeing in panic.
Confirming the development, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, said the attackers struck while residents were asleep. He added that local vigilantes have launched a search operation to locate the missing individual, as efforts continue to restore calm in the area.
The latest violence comes amid heightened tension in Riyom LGA, following the recent destruction of irrigation farmlands in Jol community. The BYM alleged that over 50 hectares of cultivated land were damaged after suspected herders grazed cattle on farms between April 21 and 22.
The association described the incident as a deliberate act that has severely impacted livelihoods, warning of its implications for food security and economic stability in the affected communities.
While acknowledging the efforts of the Special Task Force (STF), which reportedly impounded 21 cows, the group argued that the action falls short of addressing the scale of losses suffered by farmers.
The BYM has called for the immediate suspension of grazing activities in Jol and neighbouring communities, including Kwi, Wereng and Rim. It also demanded full compensation for affected farmers, increased security presence, and stricter enforcement measures to prevent further attacks.
The group warned that continued inaction by authorities could escalate tensions, stressing that while the community remains committed to peace, patience is wearing thin.
Residents have urged security agencies to act swiftly to restore confidence and prevent a recurrence of the violence.
