The Federal Road Safety Corps (RFSC), in collaboration with Shell Petroleum Development Company will train 540 volunteers to assist victims of road traffic crash in the 27 crash corridors identified across the nation.
Chief executive, FRSC, Corps-Marshal Osita Chidoka made this known yesterday, while inaugurating two-day training organised for 40 volunteers, drawn from Niger state for the first phase of the pilot project.
“It will interest you to know that you are among the 540 volunteers chosen to pioneer the project in 12 states”, he said.
Chidoka noted that 27 identified crash corridors in the country include Anambra, Imo, Delta, Rivers, Enugu, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Niger, Kaduna and Gombe states respectively but did not mention the number of volunteers drawn from each state aside Niger.
He stated that the training was designed by the corps to increase the involvement of communities along the highways where crash usually occur to help victims of road misshape.
Chidoka, who was represented by his Sector Commander in the state, Mr. David Usman, said after the training, the volunteers would be able to administer first aid treatment to road crash victims.
Other assistance expected of the volunteers includes reaching out to emergency agencies such as FRSC, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Police and Fire Service as second respondents.
The Corps Marshal said the volunteers would keep crash sites safe, collect and report road traffic crash data using approved format and forward same to the appropriate authority.
He said the volunteers after the workshop would be able to use improvised manual extrication machine to remove trapped crash victims. Chidoka said the volunteers were drawn from the accident prone areas of the 12 states.
Responding, one of the participants, Mr. Yusuf Abdullahi from Paiko local government area of the state said with the training, they would adequately assist road traffic crash victims with the right first aid.
Abdullahi said road accident had claimed so many lives and properties along Paiko-Suleja road.
He commended the FRSC and Shell Petroleum Development Company for collaborating to train them to assist road traffic crash victims.
