The former spoke twice. On each occasion the hall knew an elder statesman had the floor. He marshaled his points lucidly, responsibly and drew unsolicited applause. He started by sounding a note of warning to delegates over all the anomalies that had taken place during the deliberations. He sees danger should the trend continues.
He argued that those who convened the conference did so because of all the misunderstandings brought about selfish longings. He warned against groups that want to force their will on the conference and by extension Nigeria. He insisted such has led Nigeria to where it is currently stagnated in under development.
He insisted sustaining illicit arguments by these self-seeking groups would only worsen the country’s already bad situation. Rather than this, he said debates to take Nigeria to a pedestal of development. And warned again that delegates must be careful not destroy what has been done by the secretariat that seeks to guide and ensure that things were done properly. He warned against conceding grounds to groups that would want to impose their will on the delegates and nation at large. And warned those he thought are trying to force their will on the nation. “It will not work” he concluded to a rousing applause.
He took the floor for the second time when matters heated up on the ¾ or 2/3 majority vote before any matter is debated. The argument went back and forth, legal luminaries backed up their positions with international practice and yet no stance was sufficient to swell support.
Mohammed Gambo Jimeta, the former IGP spoke in no uncertain, on this matter. The format for the conference is spelt out. Delegates were selected based on their competences and in from different professional groups.
Whatever it is that necessitated the conference let representatives of groups present a paper that will reflect their respective positions he insisted. Everything wrong with this country would be identified, shifted and properly addressed by a Special Committee selected from the delegates. The committee will list out the remedy of our afflictions and woes. That brought the gavel on the day’s session.
