Germany to help boost agriculture in Nigeria

Date:

The Advisor for the Germany Ministry of Cooperation and Development, Eckhard Heine, yesterday announced the German government’s plan to support Nigeria with Green Centres to boost the agriculture sector.

Mr. Heine said, in Lagos, that the pilot centres to be established in Ogun, Niger and Plateau would develop tomatoes, maize, cassava and rice for the Nigerian markets.

“The Germany Ministry of Development Cooperation is ready to support Nigeria with the Green Centres, and this is aimed at the development of different agricultural products for the Nigerian markets.

“We have already carried out a fact-finding mission on the proposed states for the centres.

“The essence of the green centres is to identify and adapt crops like tomatoes, maize, cassava and rice for Nigerians,” he said.

Mr. Heine said Nigerians would be trained in the practice and professional production of these crops, and would also benefit from new farming technology and transfer of technical know-how.

The advisor expressed optimism that the project, when fully operational, would promote Nigeria’s food security drive. (NAN)
