GES: 400 fish farmers captured in Edo State

As an effort to ensure increased productivity in Edo State’s fishery sub-sector, 400 fish farmers have become beneficiaries of the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) Scheme of the present administration’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda.

According to the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Abdul Oroh, only 400 out of the 788 registered fish farmers in the state were captured in the GES scheme, this he disclosed while speaking at the flag-off ceremony of the 2014 Fisheries GES in the state.

“Two weeks have been set aside for the redemption period of the input which includes free distribution of 500 juvenile catfish and five bags of subsidized feeds at the rate of 50 percent which will be given to beneficiary farmers after the payment of 12, 500,” he said.

He said the payment modalities and redemption centers will be disclosed to beneficiary farmers through their mobile phones.

The Commissioner said: “the Edo State Government applauds the sustainability of this scheme and it is our desire that the fishermen in the artisanal value chain will be considered as well this year in order to substantially increase fish production in the state.”

The scheme which is a Federal Government initiative is being executed in collaboration with the Edo State Government and had recorded 300 artisanal fishermen who were state beneficiaries in 2013.
