The Gombe state Agency for the control of AIDS (GOMSACA) has urged the public to do everything possible to ensure people do not discriminate against people living with HIV and AIDS.
Speaking in Gombe on Monday, through the Project Manager of the agency, Dr. Suraj Abdulkarim who was represented by Alhaji Mohammed El- Nafaty, listed the modes of HIV transmission saying that the transmission of the disease is not only through sex but could be through other means of blood transmission, even as he stressed the importance for the people to know their status through test that was established by the government across the state.
The representative of the Project Manager said the services are free and advised the intending couple to know their HIV status before marriage and pregnant women to attend Anti-Natal care regularly.
Also speaking at the event, the Director of the National Orientation Agency in Gombe state, Alhaji Mato Yakubu said government is making concerted effort to address the epidemic and called on the people to join hands on deck to stop the spread of the virus.
According to him, HIV positive person can live a normal life if he or she adheres to Anti-retroviral drugs explaining that unlike diseases such as diabetes, hypertension which patients must eat a particular food HIV doest not select food to eat.
