Gov Al-makura sets up probe panel on tertiary institutions

Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura of Nasarawa state has constituted a fact finding committee to ascertain the activities of principal officers of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, College of Education Akwanga and College of Agriculture Lafia with the call on the panel to present the reports within 30 days.
Performing the inauguration ceremony at the Government House Chamber Lafia, Almakura said that the aim was to reposition the institutions for efficient and effective service delivering in the education sector in the state.
According to him, ‘’ we are here today to determine and reposition our tertiary institutions for sound learning environment devoid of corruption or fraud. My administration accord topmost priority to repositioning our institutions from primary to tertiary levels.’’
The governor expressed dismay over the level of corruption and fraud experienced in the three tertiary institutions which led to the decay in the system, despite frantic efforts put in place by the state government to revamp the education sector.
‘’ What we want is to give quality education to the younger generation. Any state that neglect education, stands to risk the future generation that would protect it. In our determination to forestall sanity. We deemed it pertinent to constitute the investigative committee to come out with results that will bring back the glory of our tertiary institutions in the state,’’ he maintained.
The governor warned that the state government will not sit down and watch public servants convert government money to their private pockets; added that government will not relent to deal with those found faulty after the investigation.
Governor Almakura gave the terms of reference of the investigation to include : Examine the general administration of the three institutions, determine the sources of funds IGR and TETFUND intervention, determine the tax of such institutions, examine the staff recruitment and qualifications as well as examine the admission policy from 2014 to date and called on the committee to work assiduously while carrying out their findings.
Responding on behalf of the committee, former Head of Service, Mr. Thomas Ogiri who is the chairman assured the governor that the committee will do justice to the assignment bestowed on them.
