Yobe state Governor, Alh. Ibrahim Gaidam has warmed vehicle inspection officers in the state to desist from issuing driving license to people who are not tested and found qualified to drive vehicles in order to reduce the incidence of road accidents in the state.
He gave the warning when he inspected the newly constructed model driving school building in Damaturu, the state capital.
He regretted that now, highly placed personalities and others sit and learn driving of cars in their rooms and then sent their boys to the VIO just to fill the form, get it stamped and, driving license would be issued to them through that someone.
”So please, desist from doing that,’ it is my believe that, whoever you approved to be given license is qualified and legible to get that license…that you train our drivers very well so that we get professionally qualified drivers who would be plying our roads in and outside the state.”
Using himself as an example of how driving licenses were issued before now, he said he started learning with the VIO who takes him round, observing him and thereafter, he was given two Ls signals that were mounted one in the front and the other at the back of the vehicle he was driving to show other drivers that this is a learner.
He said it was after six months before finally, after tested again and found qualified to drive, that he was issued with a driving license.
He however expressed satisfaction with the project and commended the ministry for a job well done
Earlier speaking when taking the governor round the edifice, the state commissioner for works and transport, Honourable Lawan Shettima Ali, told the governor that the idea for each state to have at least one driving school was a directive from the national council of transport of Nigeria.
He told the governor that the edifice, which is a renovated building, has among other things, three stimulator rooms with two classrooms and a store, two offices for instructors, was put in place at a total cost of N44.3 million
