Gov Idris Facilitates Accreditation of 7 Courses in Kebbi’s Oldest Health College 

Governor Nasir Idris has facilitated the accreditation of seven professional courses at the Kebbi State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Jega, one of the oldest tertiary institutions in the state, the Provost of the College, Alhaji Hussaini Aliyu, has said .

The Provost made the disclose this when the Kebbi State Media Team, led by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, visited the institution on Wednesday.

He said the institution had overcome several challenges through the support of Governor Nasir Idris, particularly in the area of accreditation.

According to him, the state government provided the necessary financial support for the accreditation exercise, resulting in the approval of key National Diploma programmes.

The Provost said the accredited programmes include Community Health, Health Education and Promotion, Health Information Management, Public Health, Environmental Health Technology, Medical Science Laboratory Technology, and another approved health-related programme.

He noted that the accreditation had opened new opportunities for students while strengthening the national standing of the institution.

Alhaji Hussaini also highlighted improvements in infrastructure and staff and student welfare, including the renovation of male and female students’ hostels, construction of a new entrance gate and perimeter improvements, provision of six functional boreholes—three of which are solar-powered—renovation of the ICT Centre, and provision of a new 36-seater bus.

The Provost further disclosed that the college’s monthly allocation had increased from ₦1.5 million to ₦10 million under the present administration, while staff salaries are being paid promptly.

He said the institution now conducts its examinations within the college and has strengthened student discipline through an established disciplinary committee and regular engagement with the Student Union.

The Chairman of the Governing Council, Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji Bunza, described the college as a major producer of health manpower for Kebbi State, noting that its graduates serve in primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities across the state.

He said the institution, which was established in the 1970s, had never previously secured accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for its programmes until the administration of Governor Nasir Idris.

Alhaji Bunza said the college is now admitting students through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) process following the NBTE accreditation, stressing that “all admissions now from this year must be from JAMB.”

He described the development as a major milestone for the institution and its students.

The Chairman of the Accreditation Committee of the Governing Council, Alhaji Aliyu Ladan, said the committee recorded what he described as “100% success” after Governor Idris directed that the institution should acquire nationally recognised foundational programmes.

He said the college is now listed on the JAMB e-Facility for National Diploma programmes and has commenced admissions.

Alhaji Ladan listed the accredited programmes as National Diploma in Community Health, Health Education, Health Information Management, Public Health, Environmental Health Technology, and Medical Science Laboratory Technology, noting that the accreditation had significantly improved career opportunities for students and strengthened manpower development in the health sector.

He said the development would particularly address manpower needs in laboratories and health facilities, adding that the Medical Science Laboratory Technology programme would provide trained personnel for hospitals and diagnostic services within Kebbi State and neighbouring states.

He also appealed for greater autonomy for the institution in the areas of funding and staff recruitment, which are currently handled through the Ministry of Health.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, who led the Governor’s media aides to the institution, said the visit was aimed at seeing firsthand the developments recorded under the Kauran Gwandu-led administration.

He commended the college management and the Governing Council for their efforts and assured them that the Governor’s media team would continue to communicate the achievements of the administration to the people.
