Gridlock: FRSC, Army intensify traffic control on congested Abuja–Kaduna highway
The Federal Road Safety Corps has issued a travel advisory to motorists on the busy Abuja–Kaduna Highway following severe traffic congestion caused by increased vehicular movement for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, ongoing road construction and heavy rainfall.
The advisory is contained in a statement signed by the Kaduna Sector Commander of the Corps, Corps Commander Andrew Longkam, on Sunday in Kaduna.
According to the statement, the major traffic bottleneck was identified around the Nasarawa Azara axis between Katari and Jere towns, where traffic flow has remained slow and difficult.
The Corps attributed the worsening gridlock partly to impatience and lane indiscipline by some motorists.
It stated that additional personnel had been deployed by the FRSC Kaduna Sector Command for traffic control and management along the affected corridor, with support from the Nigerian Army and other relevant stakeholders.
“Despite these efforts, traffic remains heavy and motorists are advised to exercise patience, obey traffic rules and cooperate with traffic management personnel on duty,” the statement said.
The Corps advised motorists travelling from Kaduna to Abuja to use the alternative route through Kachia, Maraban Kubacha, Jere, Bwari and Dutse Abuja.
Motorists travelling from Abuja to Kaduna were also advised to use the same route in reverse order.
The FRSC further urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and one-way driving, maintain lane discipline and ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
It also advised drivers to avoid night travel where possible, drive within stipulated speed limits and obey all traffic regulations and instructions from traffic control officers.
The Corps reassured members of the public of its commitment to ensuring safety, free flow of traffic and reduction of road crashes during the festive period and beyond.
