In an effort in Improving Integrated Management of GroundWater Resources (IWRM), Knowlegde -Based management and and Governànce of the Niger Basin and the Iullemeden- Taoudeni / Tanezrouft Aquifer system (NB-ITTAS).
The Nigerià Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in collaboration with other stàkeholders and development partners has orgànise regional workshop on the need for effective and collective effort in the Management of ground waters.
In his welcome address The Director General NIHSA, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed charge Participants at the be adopt open dialogue and take various discussion / presentation so important for the overall development of the regional ground water management.
” I am deeply honored to welcome you all to this important Regional Workshop on the Integrated Management of Groundwater Resources (IWRM) on the Project Improving IWRM, Knowledge-Based Management and Governance of the Niger Basin and the Iullemden-Taoudéni / Tanezrouft Aquifer System (NB-ITTAS)”.
” It is both a privilege and a responsibility for Nigeria, as a key stakeholder in the NB-ITTAS, to host this critical gathering of experts, policy makers, and development partners, united by a shared vision for sustainable water management and regional cooperation in the basin. The NB-ITTAS initiative represents a significant step towards strengthening our collective capacity to monitor, manage, and protect the shared water resources of the Niger Basin. Through Integrated Management of Groundwater Resources (IWRM) on the Project Improving IWRM,
we are establishing a robust scientific and data-driven framework for decision-making that is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable. This workshop presents a unique opportunity to for each country to share its experiences on best practices in the joint management of groundwater resources, in connection with surface water resources where they exist, and to update the intervention matrix by:Informing participants about the progress made at the pilot site;Updating the intervention matrix; And to present a roadmap for the remaining activities. As the host country and an active member of the NB-ITTAS, Nigeria remains firmly committed to the principles of integrated water resources management and regional solidarity.
We recognize that the challenges confronting the basin including climate variability, population growth, environmental degradation, and competing water demands transcend national borders and require a collaborative, basin-wide approach.Through NIHSA’s continued investment in hydrological monitoring, early warning systems, and basin-level data sharing,
Nigeria will continue to play a leading role in safeguarding the integrity of the NB-ITTAS for present and future generations.Let me use this opportunity to commend the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) for its coordination efforts and vision, as well as our partners from international and regional institutions for their unwavering support in building capacity and fostering cooperation among riparian states.
To all participants: your expertise, insights, and commitment are the driving force behind the success of NB-ITTAS. I encourage active participation, open dialogue, and mutual learning throughout this workshop. In closing, let us remember that water is not just a resource; it is a shared heritage and a catalyst for peace, development, and resilience. Let this workshop mark another milestone in our joint efforts to realize the full potential of the NB-ITTAS, through sound science, informed policy, and regional unity, according to the DG.
