A group under the banner of Citizens Support for Good Governance (CSGG) has called for continued focus on national balance and inclusive leadership as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
The group urges political leaders to keep dialogues that promote unity and strengthen national cohesion.
Madam Hassana Dauda, the group’s coordinator, spoke at a civic engagement forum in Abuja, highlighting the importance of fairness, representation, and sensitivity to Nigeria’s diversity in political decision-making.
She pointed out that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and stressed that inclusive governance is vital for maintaining public trust in democratic institutions and ensuring all groups feel represented across the country.
According to her, conversations about leadership should be held calmly and with mutual understanding, especially in a diverse federation where perceptions of inclusion are key to stability.
“Nigeria is a plural society. Leadership decisions must continue to reflect justice, inclusion, and sensitivity to our diversity. When citizens feel included, it strengthens unity and national trust,” she said.
Madam Dauda explained that across various civic and socio-political platforms, there’s growing engagement on how to deepen inclusiveness in governance. She noted that these discussions mainly aim to strengthen national cohesion rather than create division.
She emphasized that leadership in a country like Nigeria goes beyond politics, describing it as a symbol that fosters trust and a sense of belonging among citizens.
The issue is not about exclusion or division. It is about strengthening national trust. In a country as diverse as ours, representation and symbolism matter because they help people feel connected to the system,” she added.
She also highlighted perspectives from different stakeholder groups, including the Middle Belt, Southern Christian communities, youth platforms, women’s organizations, civil society actors, and elder politicians. She said all continue to stress the importance of inclusion in national life.
According to her, these positions generally reflect a shared desire for fairness and unity, with each group expressing concern that Nigeria be a place where all citizens feel recognized and valued within the democratic system.
Youth-focused discussions have also stressed the importance of representation in building trust among younger Nigerians. Meanwhile, women’s advocacy groups continue to emphasize that inclusiveness strengthens social harmony and democratic participation.
Madam Dauda added that elder politicians and civil society organizations have consistently called for policies that promote equity. She noted that inclusive governance is the foundation for long-term stability and growth.
While recognizing different views on leadership choices, including a focus on competence, security, and economic performance, she maintained that inclusiveness and fairness are vital to maintaining unity in a diverse nation.
