A health based group, Center for Health, Education, Economic Rehabilitation and Social Security, (CHEER), has revealed that about 70% to 80% of Nigerian workers do not know their HIV status and are not willing to be tested probably due to fear of the unknown.
The group President, Mrs. Ajia Agagbo, explained that the statistics was taken during a 3- day free HIV Counselling and Testing for men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, headquarters in Abuja.
The group, therefore, resolved to organise a HIV counselling and testing programme for both government and private institutions in Abuja.
According to Agagbo, “The main activities are to conduct a “voluntary, free HIV Counselling and Testing HCT, blood pressure and glucose testing” at the headquarters of major government institutions in the FCT Abuja.”
She added that the group’s major objective was to provide care and support to the HIV/AIDS Patient in the country.
Furthermore, the Manager of the group, Mrs. Chinelo Achebe, urged Nigerians to ascertain their status by getting tested, as it is a vital way to healthy living, adding that the organisation is committed to attaining a HIV free generation.
