Group blasts Atiku over call for Kanu’s release

The Democracy Watch Initiative has lambasted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his recent call for the unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The group described Atiku’s position as “foolhardy, arrogant, and deeply contradictory,” accusing him of political hypocrisy and inconsistency.

In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr Tunji Bamidele, the group said Atiku’s comments raised questions about his commitment to justice, national unity, and the rule of law.

“Atiku Abubakar, in his pursuit of political capital, has chosen to align himself with a figure who stands accused of grave offences against the Nigerian state,” Bamidele said.

He noted that Kanu faces charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony, including incitement to insurrection, killings of security personnel, and destruction of public and private property.

“These are not mere allegations,” Bamidele stressed. “By advocating Kanu’s unconditional release, Atiku not only undermines the rule of law but also sends a dangerous message to those who have suffered at the hands of Kanu’s actions.”

The Democracy Watch Initiative faulted Atiku for what it called a “glaring contradiction” — criticising President Bola Tinubu’s pardon for minor offenders while supporting Kanu’s release.

“How can one advocate leniency towards a figure accused of inciting violence and chaos while condemning the same for lesser offenders?” the group queried.

The organisation further expressed concern about the emotional toll on families of slain security officers and victims of violence allegedly linked to Kanu’s followers.

“To advocate Kanu’s release without justice is to disregard the pain of countless Nigerians,” the group stated. “It is an affront to the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”

It also warned that such a move could demoralise security forces, discourage new recruits, and weaken national security.

“The rule of law must prevail,” Bamidele declared. “If found guilty, Kanu must be punished appropriately. Justice cannot be twisted for political gain.”

The group urged Nigerians to reassess Atiku’s suitability for leadership, accusing him of showing indifference to the killings of over 500 Northerners and security personnel allegedly linked to Kanu’s agitation.

“A true leader must show empathy for all citizens,” the statement concluded. “Atiku’s silence in the face of such tragedy reflects a troubling disregard for the lives he claims to represent.”
