A concerned non-governmental organization, the Nigeria Democratic Front (NDF), has called for a comprehensive investigation into Senator Shehu Buba’s alleged connections with banditry.
Senator Buba, who represents the Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, is reportedly linked to Abubakar Idris, a notorious bandit currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
In an open letter addressed to the Senate President, NDF expressed alarm over the senator’s role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, emphasizing that such allegations pose a serious threat to the integrity of the National Assembly.
The group urged the Senate President to suspend Senator Buba from his committee position pending the outcome of the investigation.
NDF’s letter highlighted the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, characterized by rampant violence, kidnappings, and attacks that have disrupted agricultural productivity and displaced communities, particularly in the North Central and North-East regions.
The organization warned that the current situation jeopardizes the survival of ordinary Nigerians and necessitates urgent intervention.
The letter outlined disturbing details regarding Senator Buba’s alleged involvement with Idris, who is connected to various criminal activities in Zamfara State.
Reports suggest that the senator facilitated Idris’s registration for the 2024 Hajj through one of his senior legislative aides, raising suspicions that prompted DSS intervention.
NDF stressed the need for immediate action, stating, “Allowing Senator Buba to continue in such a sensitive role while under investigation could undermine the Senate’s integrity and Nigeria’s overall security efforts.”
They called for urgency, transparency, and accountability in handling the matter, underscoring that the Nigerian people deserve clarity and justice in the face of such serious allegations.
