The Northeast Unity Forum (NUF) has called for the immediate dismissal of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), condemning his recent actions as “political banditry” that endangers the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.
The forum’s convener, Abubakar Kabir, issued a strongly worded statement in Abuja, expressing deep concerns over Wike’s escalating threats against governors of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who support Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Kabir criticized Wike’s “thuggish orientation” and accused him of attempting to instigate crises across various states, a move the NUF views as dangerously reckless.
“Wike has lost touch with reality and become a political outcast in Rivers politics,” the statement reads, referring to Governor Fubara’s decision to cut Wike off from the state’s resources.
Kabir argues that Wike’s political maneuvers, characterized by betrayal and disloyalty, have eroded his relevance and exposed his desperation to cling to power.
The NUF further lambasted Wike for his history of turning against those who supported his rise in politics, including former Governor Rotimi Amaechi and former President Goodluck Jonathan. The forum labeled Wike’s actions as a betrayal of the highest order, reflecting his “treacherous and ungrateful” nature.
Of particular concern to the NUF are Wike’s threats to unleash violence in the states of governors who support Fubara, which the forum describes as a “direct assault on the peace and stability of our nation.”
Kabir emphasized that such inflammatory rhetoric from a public official is unacceptable and poses a significant risk to Nigeria’s democratic fabric.
In light of these concerns, the NUF is demanding Wike’s immediate removal from office, urging President Tinubu to uphold the principles of rule of law and decency by distancing his administration from “an irredeemably compromised politician.”
The forum also called on the PDP leadership to take swift action against Wike to restore discipline and unity within the party.
The NUF’s statement concludes with a stark warning: “Nigeria’s democracy depends on our collective ability to reject dangerous individuals and uphold the principles of justice, respect, restraint, and integrity.”
This call for Wike’s removal underscores growing tensions within the PDP and raises questions about the minister’s future amid increasing scrutiny of his political conduct.
