Group challenges Daily Trust report on teacher shortage in Bauchi State

The Bauchi Integrity and Credible Information Monitors (BICIM) have urged Daily Trust to maintain balanced reporting, steering clear of any bias, especially against specific leaders and political parties.

This request comes in response to a recent Daily Trust article titled “Bauchi: How Lack Of Teachers, Infrastructure Forced Primary Schools’ Closure, Turned Pupils To Farmers.”

Lawal Sani Ningi, the Chairman of BICIM, commented on the publication, stating, “We call on the Federal Government to use its authority to ensure that media organizations report impartially on situations across all states in the country.”

“We emphasize the importance for Daily Trust to avoid biased reporting, as witnessed in the recent article, and adhere to ethical standards,” he added.

BICIM also called on media proprietors and professional bodies such as the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigerian Guild of Editors, and Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) to self-regulate and adhere to their own reporting guidelines.

The group emphasized that the media should adhere to editorial policies and ethical restraints. Sensational and biased reporting only exacerbates tensions in the country. The media’s crucial role as the fourth estate of the realm is to provide accurate and unbiased information to the public.

Responsible journalism is essential to foster unity and understanding among the diverse ethnic and religious groups in our state and country.

Discussing the state of teachers in Nigeria, it’s evident that the country’s education system has faced significant challenges in recent years, with millions of children out of school. Bauchi State, in particular, has been severely affected by this issue.

It’s worth noting that the government is actively working to address this problem. The recent approval to recruit 3,000 teachers, with a focus on core subject teachers for senior secondary schools and teachers for lower and upper basic schools, demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing the teacher shortage.
