Group honours heroes of 1897 Benin massacre

A pressure group, Great Benin Descendants (GBD) has honoured heroes who fought for Benin Kingdom during the British expedition which led to adoption of Oba Ovaramwen in 1897.
The Coordinator General of the non-partisan group, Mr. Imasuen Izoduwa said this during a press conference at the weekend in Benin where a minute silence was observed in honour of the fallen heroes.
“Today, Benin has become a place struggling to locate true heroes and heroines…The British expedition was a devastating blow to the civilization of a great people whose legacies were meant to be shiny light of the black world.
“We want to use this very moment to remember to remember the heroes of 1897 expedition”, he said.
Prominent among the heroes, is General Ologbosere also known as Chief Irabor who is believed to have fought gallantly after the conquest of Benin Empire before he was allegedly killed.
Others are General Ebeikhikhimwin who was a commander of the battle front at Ughoton, a popular historic traditional site in Benin and General Asoro, the sword bearer to thee king who sacrificed his life for his master.
Also honoured are General Okunoghae who was also a sword bearer to the king and General Urugbusi who was commander at Ologbo battle front now in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The coordinator of the group, revealed that henceforth on February 14 every year will now be observed by the association and its members as Queen Iden’s Day, in recognition of her uncommon bravery, love and sacrifice.
