The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI)
has accused Amnesty International of fuelling unrest through what it described as exaggerated reports of killings and abductions.
The group said Amnesty’s figures on recent violence were “inflated, misleading, and destabilising.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group’s Director of Strategic Communication, Dr Tunji O. Bamidele, criticised Amnesty’s report which claimed that at least 65 people were killed in attacks, including 50 worshippers in Katsina State and 15 farmers in Plateau State.
According to the statement,Amnesty also reported more than 60 abductions and the displacement of 200 people.
DWI dismissed these claims, accusing the rights body of exploiting grievances and sowing division.
“The report risks igniting unrest and division.Amnesty International amplifies grievances without substantiating them, fracturing society rather than fostering solidarity”,Bamidele said.
The group argued that Amnesty’s approach amounted to encouraging rebellion, which it warned could lead to chaos, property destruction, and even harsher government crackdowns.
Instead, DWI called for dialogue and understanding as a more constructive way to resolve grievances.
“By prioritising communication over confrontation, advocates can preserve peace while pursuing justice,” the statement added.
The organisation urged Amnesty International to reconsider its methods and adopt strategies that promote unity rather than discord.
