Group Secures Donation of 5,000 Tree Seedlings to Boost Afforestation, Climate Resilience in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Climate Change Accountability Mechanism (KADCCAM) has received a donation of 5,000 tree seedlings from the Kaduna State Horticulture Association, a gesture officials described as a major boost to the state’s climate action and afforestation efforts.

The donation, which includes both economic and non-economic tree species, followed a strategic advocacy and partnership meeting between KADCCAM and the leadership of the Horticulture Association held on Monday in Kaduna.

Leading the KADCCAM delegation, Engr. Shehu Muhammad Dalhat and Rev. Michael Ijah Ikpa expressed gratitude to the Association for the donation.

They described the gesture as a significant contribution to the state’s efforts to combat climate change and restore degraded landscapes across Kaduna.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the Kaduna State Horticulture Association, Mr. Bala Umar, commended KADCCAM for promoting collaboration between government agencies and civil society organisations.

He reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote afforestation, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and environmental protection in the state.

Additionally, the Executive Director of Jobulb EduConsult, Ms. Joyce Adeji, emphasised the importance of inclusive climate governance. She urged government agencies, civil society organisations, educational institutions, and community leaders to actively involve citizens, especially students and young people, in climate action programmes.

Adeji called for the establishment of Climate Clubs in schools and communities to increase environmental awareness, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, and strengthen long-term climate resilience.

She noted that agriculture is humanity’s earliest form of education and urged stakeholders to combine indigenous agricultural knowledge with modern scientific innovations to improve food security and climate-smart agricultural productivity.

KADCCAM also commended its leadership for facilitating the partnership, specifically recognising Mr. Ibrahima Yakubu, Co-Chair representing Civil Society Organisations, and Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Buba, Co-Chair representing the Government, for their dedication to climate accountability in the state.

According to KADCCAM, the donation represents a significant milestone in Kaduna’s efforts to increase tree cover, promote biodiversity, restore degraded ecosystems, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The mechanism called on government agencies, development partners, private sector organisations, educational institutions, faith-based organisations, community groups, and residents to support tree-planting initiatives and adopt environmentally responsible practices.

KADCCAM emphasised that sustained collaboration among all stakeholders is essential to achieving lasting environmental sustainability and building a greener, more climate-resilient future for Kaduna State.
