A group, Arewa Youth Assembly, has called on the Ogun and Enugu State Houses of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governors Peter Mbah and Dapo Abiodun, alleging that both governors pose a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The call was made on Monday in Abuja by the group’s spokesperson, Mohammed Aliyu Sanni, during a press conference.
Sanni alleged that some political actors from the South were plotting to destabilise the polity and frustrate Tinubu’s second-term ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, every Nigerian, regardless of status, has the constitutional right to exercise democratic freedoms, but warned against actions capable of creating division within the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He claimed that there were moves to destabilise the Progressive Governors Forum as part of a wider agenda to weaken the APC from within.
Drawing parallels with the crisis that preceded the 2015 presidential election, Sanni recalled the division within the Nigeria Governors’ Forum under former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, which he said contributed to the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He alleged that Governor Abiodun “targeted” the Progressive Governors Forum after failing to influence its chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma.
“Because they could not manipulate Governor Hope Uzodimma, they allegedly went for Governor Dapo Abiodun to set in motion plans aimed at frustrating Tinubu’s re-election,” Sanni claimed.
He further alleged that Abiodun recruited Governor Mbah and a few other governors to create division among APC governors and weaken the party’s structure ahead of 2027.
The group warned that it would mobilise Nigerian youths against the governors if they failed to apologise within 48 hours to President Tinubu, the Progressive Governors Forum, Governor Uzodimma and the APC over what it described as an “aborted palace coup.”
“We also call on the Ogun and Enugu State Houses of Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings against Governors Peter Mbah and Dapo Abiodun for constituting a threat to democracy,” Sanni said.
The group, however, pledged support for Governor Uzodimma, whom it described as a nationalist and bridge builder committed to ensuring Tinubu’s victory in 2027.
