President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

A civil society organisation, the Democracy Watch Initiative, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in a dispute involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.

The group made the call in a statement issued on Friday, January 2, 2026, and signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr Tunji O. Bamidele.

DWI said it was concerned about recent developments following claims made by the Bauchi State governor and the EFCC’s response to the matter.

According to the group, the anti-graft agency should carry out its duties in a manner that reflects independence and strict adherence to the rule of law.

Bamidele said, “The EFCC, as an agency established to combat economic and financial crimes, has a responsibility to operate without political bias.”

The organisation urged the President to ensure that public institutions are not perceived as being influenced by political interests, warning that such perceptions could weaken public trust.

It also called on the EFCC to remain focused on its statutory mandate of investigating and prosecuting economic and financial crimes in line with due process.

The group advised Governor Mohammed to remain committed to governance and the welfare of the people of Bauchi State.

The EFCC had not responded to the claims as of the time of filing this report. Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the commission were unsuccessful.

Governor Mohammed also did not issue a fresh statement on the matter.

The EFCC has repeatedly stated that its operations are guided by law and not influenced by political considerations.
