Gunmen attack Ekiti prison, free 300 inmates

About 300 inmates have reportedly escaped from A do-Ekiti prison following an attack by gunmen who invaded the prison premises along Afao road at about 11:30pm yesterday.

The gun men were said to arrive the prison yard fully armed as they broke in through the main entrance with prison dynamite shooting sporadically into the air.

According to a prison worker who pleaded anonymity. Every attempt by the prison security men to foil the attack proved abortive as about 300 inmates allegedly escaped.

When the. Governor of Ekiti state, Mr Peter Ayodele Fayose visited the prison yard in the afternoon, he accused the prison workers of conspiracy and negligence, although there are insinuation from some quarters that the attack was a planned action to release the people arrested in connection with the killing of late Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers(NURTW) boss that was killed few months ago.

The Prison Controller General, Alhaji Aminu Sule who went straight to the governor’s office on arriving the state before getting to the prison yard where had a brief with the controller of Ekiti state command, Mr Fadipe Kehinde told the press men that 67 of the escaped inmates have been recaptured while the search was still on to recapture the rest.

Mr Fdipe said there no casualty, as he enjoyed the members of the public to assist the security men with any useful information to recapture the rest.
