A security detail attached to the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Bursar, Mr. Victor Imagbe, was on Wednesday shot dead by gunmen.
A source familiar with the incident said the security personnel was killed by a robbery gang who fled a crime scene at the neighborhood at about 2:45 a.m in Ogheghe Community on Benin Sapele in Benin City, the Edo State Capital.
The source revealed that the gunmen, jumped into the Bursar’s residence and shot Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NCDC) operative, identified as Alex Osaghae and snatched his rifle during the crossfire.
The source further said the NCDC officer died immediately while the rubbers made away with his riffle.
But Bursar who was caught in the web of confusion, was not hurt in the incident which sent jitters down the spines of residents in the area.
The Public Relations Offer (PRO) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSDC), Edo State Command, Mr. Ogbebor Efosa confirmed the incident, but gave no further details.
The spokesmen of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command, SP. Bello Kotongs, take his calls, but police sources, confirmed the incident.
Neither Mr. Victor Imagbe, the UNIBEN Bursar nor the Public Relations Officer of the institution Dr. (Mrs.) responded to inquiries by our Correspondent as at the time of filing this report.
The corpse of the deceased has been evacuated to the Central hospital morgue in Benin City.
