The Chairman, Criminal Justice and Law Reform Committee of the Nigeria Bar Association, Arthur Obi- Okafor, SAN has called on the National Orientation Agency, NOA, to sit up to its responsibility by educating Nigerians on the dangers of hate speech.
Okafor made the call, yesterday in Katsina while speaking on the theme; “Freedom of expression as a constitutional right and the challenge of hate speech in Nigeria” at a legal symposium organized by NYSC Legal Aid Scheme Katsina.
He noted that the agency must initiate ways of re-orienting Nigerians on the benefit of promoting peace and unity in the country and the negative consequences of hate speech in instigating crisis and disunity Nigeria.
In a remark, Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar of the Higher Court Katsina State blamed the elites for fuelling the fire of hate speech through the social media and advised lawyers to exhibit change of attitude to their job.
The chairman organizing committee of the symposium, Paul Terve Gbanda disclosed that the Katsina NYSC legal aid scheme has secured the bail of over 50 prison inmates across the states.
