The Ukomu Igala Organisation has called on the Kogi State Government to urgently step in to halt escalating violence between farmers and herders in Ejule-Ojebe town, Ibaji Local Government Area of the state.

The group also urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to swiftly restore law and order to prevent possible reprisal attacks in the troubled community.

The National Leader of the organisation, Maj. Gen. James Ataguba (retd.), made the appeal in a statement he signed and made available to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

Ataguba said the organisation was deeply troubled by reports of violent clashes which have allegedly claimed lives, left several persons missing and led to widespread destruction of farmlands, crops and cattle.

He expressed sympathy with families affected by the crisis and urged all warring parties to embrace peace.

“We are deeply saddened by the violent clashes between farmers and herdsmen in Ejule-Ojebe town, Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State, which have resulted in loss of lives, missing persons and destruction of farmlands, crops and cattle,” he said.

“We sympathise with all families affected by this tragic incident and call on all parties to immediately lay down their arms and embrace peace.

“We urgently appeal to the Kogi State Government to intervene without delay to prevent further bloodshed.”

The retired army general further called on security agencies to intensify operations in the area to forestall retaliatory violence.

“We also call on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to act swiftly to restore law and order and prevent reprisal attacks,” he added.

Ataguba noted that Ibaji Local Government Area had continued to face serious socio-economic challenges, which he said were worsened by years of neglect, poor infrastructure and environmental degradation affecting farming and fishing activities.

According to him, the prevailing conditions have contributed to recurring communal tensions in the area.

The organisation urged both the Kogi State and Federal Governments to probe the remote and immediate causes of the crisis and implement measures aimed at achieving lasting peace and sustainable development in Ibaji.

It also appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information on suspicious movements and activities.

“Once again, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May God grant comfort to all affected,” the statement added.
