Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, on Wednesday led a high-powered delegation on an on-the-spot assessment of key sporting facilities across the state as part of efforts to rejuvenate grassroots sports development and upgrade infrastructure.
The tour, conducted in line with Governor Umo Eno’s directive to take inventory of all state-owned sports facilities, covered the Ikot Ekpene Stadium, West Itam Sports Centre, Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo Township Stadium, and the Olympic-size swimming pool.
Elder Bassey, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia, and several directors, said the exercise was aimed at providing the government with an accurate report on the condition of facilities for effective rehabilitation and utilization.
“We have seen a lot, and it has been quite instructive,” the Commissioner said. “The Governor has shown strong interest in sports development and wants to be fully briefed on the state of our facilities. After visiting other centers, we’ll compile a detailed report highlighting areas that need repairs, upgrading, or replacement.”
During the inspection, the delegation interacted with athletes training in table tennis, para-weightlifting, swimming, judo, and weightlifting. The Commissioner commended their dedication and urged them to maintain consistent training beyond competitions.
“It is impressive to see our athletes training consistently,” he remarked. “Sports development should not be seasonal—we must always be ready.”
At the Uyo Township Stadium, Elder Bassey also visited the camp of the Ibom Angels Football Club, where he listened to complaints from players and officials. He assured them that their concerns would be addressed promptly as part of the ministry’s reform agenda.
In a gesture reflecting his hands-on approach, the Commissioner directed the immediate provision of proper kits to judo athletes found training without appropriate gear, stressing that the welfare of athletes remains a top priority for the Ministry.
Elder Bassey further highlighted the need to revive the swimming pool at the Uyo Township Stadium, noting that Governor Eno had expressed strong interest in making the facility functional with the engagement of qualified coaches and lifeguards.
