The Minister of Defence ,General Aliyu Mohammed Gusau retired, has said Nigeria deserves a defence policy that reinvigorates the spirit of service and patriotism in its military if the nation is to move
forward and curb the present insecurity challenges bedeviling it.
He stated this in his opening remarks at the public presentation of the review of Nigeria’s National Defence Policy (NDP) held in Kaduna yesterday.
General Gusau who was represented by Mr Tunde Fagbemi said the nation at present needs to develop a coherent policy on the defence industry which is a vital role to play in equipping the Nigerian armed forces.
“A well established, properly managed and adequately funded military has enormous protection to contribute to national economic growth, job creation, technological innovation, scientific research and skill development.
“Therefore recognizing that defence is not exclusive to the military but the entire society, it is important that the gap between the military and civilian is bridged so that the necessary support from the civil populace is maximized,” he said.
The minister added that national defence policy is an important document which provides guidance to government about a country’s short, medium and long time policy setting and capabilities which allows the government and citizens to understand the opportunity and challenges for the country’s future defence and security needs.
According to him the current National Defence Policy (NDP) was promulgated in 2006 and since then the nation has undergone a lot of transformation in terms of development as well as security challenges.
In his own remarks, the lead paper presenter, Amb Babagana Kingibe, said Nigeria’s democratic system must lay foundation for an inclusive society which is critical for the deepening for the fledging nation’s democracy.
“It is as simple as our leaders allowing us the people to freely vote for the government of our choice at all levels, the government that we can hold accountable. ” he said
